I had once joined a typing institute to elarn typing and shorthand though I quit before completing the course. I think the world is tuck with QWERTY the world's worst possible layout. Our computer keyboardwon't jam like mechanical typewriters so we can do away with QWERTY. The Dvorak layout is much faster, I have heard, someone reached 212 wpm on it.

Hi Vijay,
You made me nostalgic!! I was reminded of the days I learnt Typewriting. It is definitely useful now after some 17 years. I can proudly say I did complete both the Lower and Higher grades in Typewriting. But one thing was clear even when I was learning the "art". I am not learning this to become a typer (to use your phrase!!). I never managed to try out Shorthand.
I can tell you that Shorthand is very much in vogue still and it is taught in few places like Stenographers Guild, Behind Siva Vishnu Temple, T Nagar.

Anil . . I'm not comparing to say one is better than the other. I was just saying what suits me and what does not. They are all just statements of opinions. There are lots of people who prefer mechanical devices to electronic equipments. Even I do, for certain things.

You should get yourself a gravatar (that little picture next to the commenters' names). Check this link for instructions.

I do have the similar experience while studying. I was forced to learn typewriting though I was reluctant to go early morning at 6 am. My speed was around 14 min per page. I quit the 'lower' exam as I was not confident enough to clear with the speed I was. The Pitman's shorthand was famous too and I was't keen to pursue it as why to overload with one more unknown language when we already have many in place.

Vijay, how can you compare the features of Typewriter Vs Electronic Keyboard ? after all its Hard copy vs Soft copy. Typewriter is the mother of existing electronic keyboard. Though they belong to same gender there is a 15 yrs of technology gap, but both has its own uniqueness and can't consider for comparison. For eg: A son can certainly run faster than his father but we can't send both in a race to see the results. Any new invention will certainly evade the existing process and its sad to leave them alone as we need to excel along with technology & rest of the world for better communication.

I appreciate you confidence on xbox console when you "can beat to death" any opponent. - Lets play a game of my choice ;)
