Mr.Masti Ki Paatshala, Please come to India first (from US). Then, let us ASSUME whether we would participate in the freedom struggle or not. As Vijay pointed out, there are pressing need for MANY struggles... the list goes on and on. We are not aware of the struggles of our fellow citizens in the first place, it shows our apathy and extent of patriotism, fraternity etc etc....

One last question, How many of you have voted or encouraged the participation of your friends/family in elections ?

If at all we vote, we do thorough analysis and vote for celebrities!!!! Come one .. let us be realistic and not shy away from truth!!!

Needless to say, well written Vijay. I agree absolutely.

I thought I was. Anyway . . .

I'm primarily talking about the pre-independence period. And trying to see if that the response is supported by or substantiated by our present behaviour. That's because, anything about the past, we can say anything, absolutely anything. I'd have fought for the independence, I'd have prevented Gandhi's assassination, I'd have participated in the second world war and all that. I was trying to know that and also trying to tie it with our present mindset and behaviour.

The separation of I/WE is very intentional. I don't agree to your statement that everybody participated in the freedom struggle. We had 30 crore population in the 1940's. How many of they actively participated in the fight for independence? Few thousands? Few tens or hundreds of thousands? The human hurricane did not span over all 30 crore population.

Vijay,

Be Specific, Sacrifices When.? It’s we @ 1947 or the slavery @ 2K.? I think you mixed both.
Ok, I said I would have participated if I exists during Independence days as I got inspired by our true young leader’s stories as it’s a burning issue to every common indian be it from your neighbors, friends, ppl across the nation from villages, towns, cities and I would have been certainly be a part of it.

“How many of you quit your jobs/families now.?” Why are you separating I/we from the family. When the slavery was a fiery issue during independence to every individual including your/our family members and kids everyone have participated in the event either through violence or non-violence. The age of the HRA team (Azad, Sukdev, Bhagat Singh, Rajguru, Bismil) was around 15 as you hardly know anything at that age since ever indian were wild and fury against bounded British rule so the song was on play as “We” till we get independence and now we all got freedom to fly high and its primarily “I”, My family, My comforts, My Time.

If you are asking me “If I ever fought for a social cause/problem or participate in the movement now” – My answer is NO, as neither I am not like an “Anniyen” nor not inspired to join naxalite’s team. But if the same HRA team & true heroic leaders exists now inspiring me sporadically and if the same pace & tempo is ON as “We” across the nation for any common problem I will certainly join the wave now aswell. How can one sit idle when human hurricane is ON.

To all those who say that you'd have fought for the independence:

Do you just complain about social problems or you do something about it?

What have you done in your life so far, that makes you believe that you'd have fought for the independence?

How many of you quit your jobs/families now, if a similar situation arises in the country now?

Prithvi

By sacrificing I meant living a life for others and fighting for an independence if there was no impact for me. I may not have done that.

Yes. I would have fought for the Indian independence.

" There were so many martyrs in the freedom struggle who spent all their lives and got nothing for themselves. So many unsung heroes. I don’t think I can make such sacrifices. And I don’t want to make such sacrifices."

Sacrifices - There was a larger reason/rationale for our forefathers/leaders sacrifices.

When you mean sacrifice, what are you refering to ? Is it sacrificing,
a) Your freedom
b) Your Individuality
c) Your independance
d) Your beliefs . . .

Good One,
Well, I too would have join the club of "Quit India Movement". Having heard unpteen heroic stories of Bhagat singh, Chandra sekhar Azad, Subhash Chandra Bose etc... I was facinated to know more & more, could be my blood boil fast being young when I hear their heroic history. When its a burning common problem of freedom & slavery from British to every one - friends, neighbours & every human acroos the nation I would have not sit idle and wait for the "problem to hit me personally or to my family". My patriotism would have been ON & I would have joined the do or die team - The HRA (Azad, Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev, Rajguru later may be in Bose team) instead of Gandhi's "Satyagraha" non-violence team. I feel violence was acceptable against British in such a slave struggle especially after the massive blood flow incident in Jallianwala Bagh.

I admire and seek more info on Subash Chandra Bose who believed and started his own army - "The INDIAN NATIONAL ARMY" to fight against formal slavery - British. He is a Legend. How India would have been if these unsung hero's did exists after independence.

I agree leaders inspire the common people. Now all our beloved leaders are behind money from politics. Now, for everyone it all depends on our priorities to get inspired. Being, comforts just a right click away in this contemporary lifestyle we hardly see people getting inspired for any public movements. I believe our all time great leader is "Gandhi" as he moved the entire nation.

Apart from Gandhi's, How many of us today remember & wish our patriotic hero's on their birthday's or atleast remember all forgotten hero's on our independece day who fought for independence with out any political game...? Neither the Indian Government or the media does not even have courtesy to publish this as both are busy with movie & cricket celebrities.

Let’s atleast, only once, say in our hearts that: We all breath easy because of your courage efforts against British.

Vj,

I always believe non co-operation is the only powerful weapon among all sophisticated weapons! It also demands a strong co-operation & sacrifice for being non co-operative! Gandhiji is once for all the best inventor according to me! A true meaning for sacrifice! God of inspiring leaders! There are many such heroes (Unluckily unknown) in current modern era as well! Non-cooperation can resolve all our modern day problems. That's a different topic all together! Let me keep it aside.

Participating for a social cause? It always depends on the situation Vj! Unless and until a social problem personally hit me I don't really care. In modern day, immaterial of what's happening in politics, society and infact in my next street, I am able to adjust. That's because I am comfortable for myself and my family with God's blessings! I cannot certainly be the same if that's inside my house! I am not selfish by saying so rather I am weak. I want to ensure a peaceful life for my family and that's what I strive for!

May be in 1910s I would not have been comfortable as I am now! If not me atleast 80 % of the people would not have been comfortable, badly needing a solution! Luckily they had a God born then to inspire and lead them. Had I been within the uncomfortable 80 % who had nothing to loose, I would have joined Gandhiji or even Netaji! On the other side had I been within the comfortable 20 % like I am now may be I would not have!

Situations drives people more than beliefs and thoughts! Plus you also need an inspiring, popular Godly leader to drive such a massive struggle!

P.S: My 80/20 ratio of 1910 is purely based on analysis within my brain :-)

@ Freya - I loved history too, particularly medieval history.
@ ilbrutto - Thanks. I'd have joined you in the underground thingy but not sure if I'd have fucked up my life.
@ Ravee - You seem to agree with me in everything. What can I tell you? Keep agreeing!
@ Venkat - Thanks. You're spot on. Leadership inspires participation. As we are talking about a past event, we know who the leaders are. You should now make a guess on whether you'd have joined.
@ vidya - So you mean you'd have played active role in the freedom struggle?

History used to be my favourite subject (still is), I am still facinated by Bhagat Singh and Netaji, i'm not much of a Gandhian.
I think the freedom struggle continues even today, freedom from poverty, corruption, terrorism etc, etc, and every individual can make a difference, its not just the IAS and the IPS, you can fight corruption by being honest, even if it means waiting for months to get things done. How many of us have tried to bribe the local policeman if caught in a traffic point, and later on we ourself crib about the system. Small things can make a lot of difference, but we ignore those small things.
Personally I never offer bribe even if it is only for 100 rs to speed up things.

I think the freedom struggle continues even today, freedom from poverty, corruption, terrorism etc, etc, and every individual can make a difference, its not just the IAS and the IPS, you can fight corruption by being honest, even if it means waiting for months to get things done.
Hi Vijay,

Nice thought provoking post.. I appreciate your boldness.

I think the decisions are taken based on emotions on most of the occasions. It also depends on the Leadership. Leadership inspires participation.

I might have joined the freedom movement and you would be reading about me in IV standard History text book.

Vjy,
For me every moment captured in Histroy in relation to Freedon Struggle has always kept me in reading and created interest to know further and further. Never the less there are few instacnes where I felt , "why can't me ". Generating the feelings is very easy , bringing in to reality is tough . As you rightly said how many would like to go for Mlilitray , IAS, IPS rather like to go for MBA and CA. Your view taken.

Good question and a very good post! There were a lot of underground newspapers and magazines that participated in the freedom struggle. I think I'd have been in one of them. And would have probably f*cked up my life.
