I believe their is life everywere if you think about it. Science have discovered many chemicals and thousands of cells and organisms in recent years. Not all of them are alive either. Our Galaxy and other universes are created by so much matter. I bet there are even materials that humans have not been discovered. Scientists always have very interesting conclusions about the formations of our home planet earth. But what do we no.

Space is so unbelievably big that it is a ridiculous idea to conclude that we should be the sole example of developed life forms in existance.
For example, if there is life surrounding only 1 in every 500 billion stars, then there will be over 200 million civilisations out there!

Anyway who thinks that of the trillions of planets across the universe we are the only life forms seriously needs to put themselves into perspective…

I now have a MacBook Pro and I know its early days, but I feel like a schoolboy every time I look at it! thanks to Huawei on the net and the insanely simple Mac process, I managed to connect to the net despite my blinding headache last night.. I couldn’t wait!
I’m not sure anyone who has not experienced a Mac will understand your line about the Mac design. Being a 2.4 with 4 GB and new graphics card, the Pro is slick and fast. real fast.
I wouldn’t so much agree with you that the Mac was designed for you though. It was designed for me
And oh, incidentally, the first site i visited on my new Pro was bluechampions and the next was vjkrishna.com. Hopefully that buys me some credits

That’s because LIFE does not always need OXYGEN in order to survive!
i.e. microorganism like anaerobic bacteria survive without oxygen, in the opposite, they won’t survive if they get oxygen as it’s poisonous!! : )

Well yes . . they are completely different posts. The ‘winner takes it all’ was all about my sympathy towards people who think they are losers. It’s about how the society treats them and how they treat themselves. Whereas this post is all about statistics.

In human thoughts (not just relations), all kinds of biases (incl this one) and prejudices do exist generally. That’s where the concept of ‘critical thinking’ comes in.

I was just trying to explore the possibilities of such biases in human relations as well. I agree that understanding suvivorship bias will help in making good decisions by picking up a perfect sample. However also wanted to know how this will apply in human mindset / behaviour.

Do you mean to say that such biases are not there in human relations ? And this topic is not related to such biases at all? I see a close relationship between this post and one of your earlier posts named “Winner takes it all”. Do you think these are completely different topics?

Santy – I’m afraid you’re missing the point there. Weighing the existing results (positive + negative) as the whole population makes for a better statistical method than just going only the positives or only the negatives. This concept doesn’t relate to optimism or pessimism. This concept relates to a sound statistical method considering all results that make a complete population.

The concept is not about looking at failures and learning from them. The concept is all about not glorifying the certain samples of a whole population, which might give you skewed results. Basically, this is about statistics and not about confidence or mindset (optimism/pessimism).

Haa! Anusha stole the words from my mouth! I completely agree with the way survivorship bias was related with optimistic mind set.

Motivation is the key to success. I am not talking about getting motivated by others. I am talking about self motivation. How much one is able to keep himself motivated is largely influenced by survivors and not by those who didn’t. I agree that there are lots to learn from the other group as well. It’s good to know where they went wrong but not always. The more you start reading things that did not go right dont you some how push your mind towards low morale? Doesn’t it make people get nervous?

I agree with that plane example that you said. How about a 12th standard student studying for public examination. Wouldn’t he become nervous when he start looking upto people who failed. Fine that he has to see why he failed and start ensuring that he also did not make the same mistake. However it somehow puts in that negative thought of failure which wasn’t there until then!

Same with a batsman who has to hit a six of the last ball. He certainly cant think about players who did not make it when he is facing the ball! Wouldn’t it make his hands wetter than making his heart hotter!

I agree that there is no point in getting angry as we dont resolve the reason for angriness by getting angry. Angriness is like a drug that gives you temporary satisfaction. A feeling of satisfaction that you vented out your feelings finally. However the problem still exists.

Angriness is just like smoking a pack of cigar at a stretch and then feeling bad that you spoiled your lung The point here does cigar solve your problems! No, absolutely no. Instead you loose yourselves. One can quit smoking only gradually after conscious effort. I feel to get over anger similar effort is required. Sometimes even more than whats required to quit smoking

I like the way you walk into people and break open the topics in their subconscious minds! That’s why I like your blog and I am a fan of it. Not because you are a superman

I totally agree with your point when you said anger is the outcome of one’s inability, helplessness, unwillingness to accept their mistakes. However the real challenge lies in getting over the moment of madness which is highly difficult practically. It’s easy to talk and write about angriness when we are calm but very difficult when it comes to real situation. I believe nobody can influence one’s state of anger or happiness. It’s natural. My simple tool to overcome anger is to stay calm when I am angry which helps me save time that I spend on repending later.

Very well said Anusha! Yes, the survivorship bias has sometimes to do with ‘optimistic’ outlook. In fact, being ‘optimistic’ or ‘pessimistic’ might also (not always) bias the thoughts and conclusions.

An amazing post and an amazing concept. I am truly impressed with the concept. This is what is happening almost always and what we are doing on a day-to-day basis. The example of the planes being gunned down is truly impressive. I guess survivorship bias is also a way of trying to be optimistic. Now am really beginning to wonder about the famous quote “Learning from experience”. It probably helps as long as it is not a survivor experience.

Santy & Anusha – You say that you don’t agree with the statement “we have only ourselves to blame for our anger”. Well, I’ll tell why I wrote that.

The question is not around anger is natural or not. The instances that you have mentioned are the ones when it is natural or normal for someone to get angry. My whole point is whether it’s necessary? Does it help? My point is that it is pointless.

You ask “is there a limit beyond which you get angry”. My answer is YES. Absolutely YES. But I only wonder WHY? What is the point in getting angry? You say that an injustice makes you angry. I think the more we understand the people and the society, the less we are disappointed and the less we are angry. Good makes us happy and the bad makes us angry, unhappy, disappointed and upset. The realisation that the good as well as the bad will continue to exist (no matter how much we try to tilt the balance) is the ‘awareness’ that I was referring to. The more aware we are, the less the need for anger.

Yes, it is sad to see people spit on the road. If I have to get angry for this, what are the other things I must be angry for. Will I ever rest? That’s why I say, good and bad (as we define them) co-exist, probably in equal proportions. Being sad or angry for bad will only take our time away from enjoying the good.

By the way, this post was primarily about getting angry at someone instead of anger towards society, governments, religious organisations, terrorists, bad guys etc.

Another well written post from you Vijay. “In other words, we have only ourselves to blame for our anger” – I don’t quite agree with this statement. All you have said in this post is right. Anger is not the way out. I agree. But it just doesn’t creep out of our immaturity and incapability to handle situations. There are times when you get angry for the injustice dumped on you or someone else. Just tell me how can you overcome anger when you see someone chiding someone on the road. Or when someone spits on the road in front of you. I get angry for all these reasons too. Anger that most of the times cannot be directed on a person and doesn’t see results. But you feel the emotion all the same. I think this is perfectly justifiable and not an immature reaction. I would differ on your views owing to these points.

You spoke my mind out when you said, “I do get angry sometimes. Once the moment of madness is over, I feel ashamed that I couldn’t find a better way to deal with it. And I make sure I deal it a more matured manner in future. That’s a promise I make to myself.”

However I feel that such a feeling would come only to people who are so very bonded with relations, family, friends, colleagues & whoever they meet in their life. I like your point about anger being one of our many emotions. You can argue why we need to suppress that. My view is not so much around suppressing anger but about creating a certain awareness and understanding that the need for anger does not even exists. So it’s not about suppressing, it’s about the elimination itself.

I was angry for a while as it took 6 months for a post since SEP ‘09.? I can’t show my anger and bang my own computer right.!!! I was bit wise in doing that to your new MAC than to my Windows computer, I don’t feel ashamed for this as my anger has a reason . You are forgiven provided if you don’t bring my anger back heee…

I read in one of the proverbs “Anger is a letter short of Danger but its the most dangerous” – Its very true as our angry actions,experiences and angry moments teach give us only lessons and nothing else. Its a part of our emotions most use it as a weapon to see the expected moment, but not the wise. The successfull angry ppl are just in a history and not in legendry/role model list to remember. For eg: Hitler Vs Gandhi; John McEnroe Vs Federer; ……. vs Rahman

VJKrishna..I am from your neighbouring state..well actually above your state.I am 31 and I’ve been to the char dham yatra, though i covered only three dhams due to time constraints.I’ve been to Gangotri, Badrinath and Kedarnath. I could not go to Yamunotri. Let me only say one thing about Himalayas. “THERE IS NOTHING LIKE THE HIMALAYAS IN THE WORLD”. Its absolute privilige and bliss to visit them. The trip actually changed my entire perspective of life and the way we live in the cities. I was in a totally different world. I ‘ve been some of the best moutains in the world, be it european alps, america or Australia but there is nothing like the himalayas.The places around the world are scenic, but himalayas are much more than that. I have no words to describe what i saw and felt. But, it could be a little tough if you are not an experienced high altitude trekker, but still manageable.I myselves wasn’t experienced and wasn’t prepared at all, but i did it.I had no plans how to go there and what to do.A casual trip to rishikesh took me all the way up. If you plan to go there, practice cardio exercises and lots of walking.Go there prepared with all the clothing and accesories. It could be peak summer with 40+ temperatures in india but you will experience sub zero temperatures there.I am going there again this summer to finish the one dham left and may be go to all of them.Trust me its worth.
